Being from Montreal, every time I read or hear about CFCF I can’t help but think about the good old CFCF 12; a local TV station. I wonder if that’s where his name came from. Aside from the vintage vibes this vid brings, I really dig his sinister red mask. Creepers.
CFCF buzzed pretty loud in ‘08, with a slew of Midi-fied synth tunes that sported a mellow disco flavor. He also got pretty gangster on that remix tip, reworking the Crystal Castles, Sally Shapiro and the Teenagers among others.
January 20th saw his release of the Panesian Nights EP which you can cop from Paper Bag Digital or any other fine digital music retailer. Don’t sleep on heat, he’s sure to make huge moves in ‘09.
My personal favorite remix of his is his rework of Midnight Star’s disco cheese The Midas Touch.

On top of having one of the cleanest and most well designed MySpace pages I’ve ever seen, the gang at Unruly Records have been bringing quality Baltimore heat since 1994. Take Baltimore Club don (and Unruly founder) Scottie B, label mate King Tutt and Shawn Ceasar and you get the almighty Chavy Boys of London. They just cranked a serious Baltimore mix for XLR8R, keeping it more than just “Sing Sing” fresh from start to finish. Not enough DJ Technics, KW Griff and Rod Lee floating around these days.

Evidence (aka Brad McLaughlin) is originally from Sudbury but is now residing in Toronto. Versatility is the best word to describe this young up and coming producer. Whether its drum and bass, dubstep, house/electro or even techno; Evidence always brings a fresh vibe with his production. Keep an eye out for this guy to be making big moves in 2009!
Frankie Gunns has been a staple in the Toronto Drum and Bass community for well over a decade now. Few people in the city can rival the selection of vinyl that this man has at his disposal. As a long time manager of Play De Record (a legendary Toronto record shop) he has an infinite supply of vinyl at his fingertips. Last week the Dubslingers crew had him roll through Thymeless for an exlusive reggae set. Gunns brought the heat with his little box of rare 45’s and had the crowd vibing to some sweet classic reggae mixed with a few recent hits.
Dubslingers Wednesdays @ Thymeless (355 College St @ Augusta) is Toronto’s longest running dubstep weekly. Running strong for almost 3 years now, dubslingers was started in 2006 by dj and producer Jawbone. Some of the other usual suspects that have been working dilligently at pushing the dubstep sound and keeping this weekly running are Sidenote, SubHuman, Coi, Capro, and Link. I see big things in 2009 for this relatively new musical genre and these dubslingers deserve a BIG UP for pushing the sound forward.
Never a disappointment, the Mad Decent clan clock the #44 edition of MD Worldwide radio with a Federation Sound mix. Kenny Meez linkin’ riddims from the likes of Vybz Kartel, Bounty Killer, Busy Signal and Demarco among others… super smooth.
Dance Area are Dirk Boogie and Mollono Van Bass. Throw friend Austin Boston into the mix with a grizzly synth line, a fierce bit of boom boom bap and plenty of snare hits and you get some serious duch thunder pop. Always Anytime 24/7 or AA247 is out now on Erol Alkan’s Phantasy label and you can cop it on Beatport. Solid efforts on the remix front from the likes of Noob, SkullJuice and Starkbot. As it turns out, you don’t need an expensive mic to record a catchy vocal hook; Austin spat his greece for this track into an iPhone. Wick!
