Leighton from Keytars and Violins (a stellar blog I’ve just recently begun to follow regularly) just did a stupendous deep ‘n dark disco mix for the London music magazine Dummy. Fantastic soulful 90s throwback from Toronto’s very own Azari & III. It feels like a bit of a guilty pleasure because its got such a catchy hook, but either way I’m pretty sure you’ll listen to it more than once. Really hope this one gets a release… definitely has the potential for some massive remixes.

I’ve had this Floating Points rework of Real to Reel’s 80’s funk jam Love Me Like This (not to be confused with early 90’s Reel To Reel) on loop ever since I first heard it a couple months ago. On a first listen it sounds like such a simple piece… but it emotes a certain sincerity that I’ve found lacking in a lot of the dub-downs that I hear. I’d never heard the original until today… but man, one of the recent comments on the video said it best… these dudes take no prisoners.

I’m gonna take it back to the old school for a hot second. In 1988 the Rumours Riddim dropped and took the dancehall scene by storm. Originally produced by Augustus “Gussie” Clarke this has become one of the most classic dancehall riddims to date with numerous re-workings of it surfacing in the last 20 years. The infectious bass line is just way too rude and is sure to make you move your feet. The biggest drop on the riddim may be up for debate but in my mind Lady G just kills everything with her cut “Nuff Respect”. A close second is Gregory Isaacs with the title track “Rumours”. Special mention goes to Josey Wales “Everyone Hustling”. Check it!

Berlin’s Oliver $ has had some massive tech releases this past year, hitting the streets hard with Watcha Gonna Do? and What’s In Your Head both out on Made To Play. The edit he did of his own tune Ta Com Medo De Mim featuring Deize Tigrona on Man Recordings has found its way into most of my sets this year as a great bridge track. His latest comes in the form of a remix of Gio Martinez and Genetik’s Rempejack out on Kingdom Kome Cuts. This absolutely massive mix sports some sweet floaty bass peppered with slashing trumpet stabs and bleeps and blips from the original mix. Love it.

Though I guess we’re later than your average blog in postin’ some Uncle Funky, there have been a bunch of wicked tunes that I’ve been getting down to as of late that I just had to pass along. Sadly, I’ve been meaning to get this post up for at least two weeks now and just haven’t been able to buckle down…
Alas, the Greenmoney kids are blowing my mind with solid refix after solid remix to the point that my head just might explode when I can actually play their remix of Trevor Loveys’ Organ Grinder in one of my sets.

They also did some fantastic work for Yo Majesty, Terry Lynn and Gant-Man all of which you can get your sweet hands on at the ‘port should you be so inclined. I’ve been trying to find a way to get at least one of these into my sets for the last little while ’cause they’re all serious fire.
Another great funky tune that I just can’t seem to get enough of is one from genre pioneers Crazy Cousinz. I’m pretty sure this one’s been kickin’ around since the end of last year, but I couldn’t resist sharing its slow build to xylophonerie, even if you’ve already got it.
