Yesterday I was walking through a shopping mall and as I passed by the Parasuco store I was amazed as I heard Dubstep pounding out of the store speakers and into the mall concourse…. it occured to me at that point that there probably wasn’t a bigger hit in 2009 than the anthem “In For The Kill (Skream Remix)”.
Needless to say it was a big year for Dubstep as the genre exploded onto the world stage. Here in Toronto we were spoiled with headliner after headliner. Promo companies like Embrace & 40 hz were busy bringing most of the biggest names in the game.

A little disco fire to help smother our holiday slackathon….
Deep Suga & Uner have just teamed up on Diynamic and put together what feels like one of the best disco throwbacks of the year. Filtering KC & The Sunshine Band’s Boogieman into a never ending tease just oozes Riva Starr’s I Like It, but somehow Boogieman feels like a more interesting choice than That’s The Way. That and the vox is held back just enough to make the rhythm what you want after the horn apex. On the flip, Vor Haus and Hdah showcase the talents of Spain’s Iranzo Lasia and Piekin collabo with Uner… all cuts worth copping.

I just reach back from a week in Jamrock so this one speaks loud and clear to me. Chasing Shadows brings forth another murderously vicious bass line that drops like a tidal wave of filth. FOR MAXIMUM EAR DRUM EXPOSURE, TURN THIS ONE THE FUCK UP.
Tonight is the Peer Pressure camp’s very last Tuesday night TeenWolf at Blizzarts… a jam myself and the PnT extended family tried to reach whenever we could while we were visiting/living in Montreal. This was Canada’s SURE SHOT for Tuesday nights… and though we’re in Toronto these days it’s still really sad to see it go. It seems everyone is moving on to bigger and better things, but the good times had at this night and all the classic mixes associated with it will never be forgotten.
Peer Pressure’s latest mix is a 21 track tag team promo they did for their monthly at the Drake. A-Rock, Hatchmatik and Merk Meny’s (who appears to be reppin’ Toronto now) each contributed 7 tunes to showcase their current steez. Always solid.
Solo has been running straight alchemy on every one of his productions all year, but this Wiley rework is almost too much to take. With the hook throwing back to White Town’s Your Woman and the seductive xylo reeling lovers, shakers and bakers right on it this remix shows absolutely no mercy in its entire four minutes and three seconds. GET!!! Full cred to Palms Out for this one.

How this works so well I’m not sure… but the Star Wars fans out there should appreciate it. Fredski and Tomas Barfod on the remix tip here slow landing a UFO and then taking you for a drink at the Cantina. Deeply dug team Exploited… deeply dug. Shir Khan Presents is definitely a compilation worth checking, tons of goodies on there. Fredski also has a new track on the exciting new Tarteletrelease I’ll probably toss up later this week.

I found another great Barfod remix on my new favorite hometown (Montreal) blog As Heard From Mars just a few weeks back that I though I’d share as well. Here Barfod reworks Bon Iver’s Re:Stacks emo tune into a blissful slow bumping chunker.

Sometimes skipping a vinyl purchase while waiting for a digital release is a big mistake. M.in & Bastian Schuster’s unbelievable Jazz Me Please is one such example. Though it just dropped digitally on weplayminimal, it’s one of those that’s left me scratching my head wondering why I didn’t order the wax in July when it was first available. M.in was droppin’ this tune in his early summer mixes and it was always the absolute standout. Holy shit though, layering the greasiest sax ever under that jazz piano is a clear victory. This is a without a doubt a track for the ages and one that will never fail your dance floor. If anyone out there knows where those samples are from, pleas hit up the comments. M.in b-side collabo with Jonas on Balkan Style is also quite tight.

Though I’ve not been a huge fan of everything that Guesthouse puts out, there’s definitely some quality in and amongst the filler on a lot of their releases. Gramophonedzie’s Why Don’t You was definitely their best release this year, but Jeff Service has just done a great rework of Khia’s My Neck My Back that has a deeeeeeep sub holding one note steady through the entire tune. Squeaky clean track to jack to for your less than clean Friday night.

Winter is nodding it’s grim head here in Toronto… hopefully at least one of these tunes will help unfreeze those cold cheeks and fingers if you’re not lucky enough to be somewhere warm and the sun didn’t set at 4:30 PM for you today.
I’ve been teething for some new Jamie Vex’d (of the LuckyMe family) ever since I first heard his incredible broken beat style dubstep remix of Scuba’s track Twitch out on Hotflush in late 2008. His In System Travel EP along with the Burial flavored remix he did of Starkey’s Miracles over the summer completely floored me too. Everything here manages to burst deep subs, explode sine waves, pop glitch hits and chant deep emotive vox samples without anything sounding out of place. Unfortunately his myspace shows no signs of new life, but these here definitely pack enough in to keep me checking pretty regularly.
