B.d.i. + Solomun

cpcoaster

Kenton Slash Demon recently did a great little mix for The Curb Crawlers and there were a couple of beats in it that really caught my ear. The first was a piece off Diynamic label head Solomun ’s recent full length Dance Baby called Forever. The slow filters on the keys, shakers and sequenced bass notes keep it deep but rhythmic from start to finish. The second was B.d.i.’s left-field NYC disco track City & Industry, with its evolving squelched out lasers… you’ll feel like you’re in the process of traveling through something, maybe time.

Linkwood

I was a bit devastated by the end of this…

Great p-funk meets space disco flavored jam from Linkwood off Firecracker Recording’s EP4. Found the video above on their MySpace.

Feeling this one big time… and it got me itching for Chromatics‘ In The City somehow…

Linkwood have also got a new full length out on Prime Numbers called System. I have yet to listen to it, but I’m taking this Who La La as an indication that it’ll sport some serious groove ethic.

Gallop

A track that seems to find it’s way into almost every funky house mix I’ve come across this past year is Lil Silva’s Seasons.  It’s got a perfect intro of slow growing congas and strings tricked with synths and horns that work themselves up just in time for the rolling harmony of grimy bass action that comes with the drop. It’s just such a versatile tune that works in so many contexts and is without a doubt one of the hottest funky tunes to date.

Dude has also got himself going on the remix tip, getting a gallop going on Drop The Lime’s latest Set Me Free.

Enter Teezy (Supra1’s funked out alter ego, 1/2 of Supra1) and Zeppy of Cracow, Poland’s PL Funky crew. Crafting what feels like a comparable answer to Silva’s funky anthem is their absolutely massive tune MTP Riddim. I was just massacred from first listen and have had this beat pouring into my ears no less than 50 times in the last week. Taking it a step further, their entire crew have seemingly self-released a full EP of funky riddims that are just exploding with freshness and they’re giving it away for free. Check it on Floating In Space, an awesome Polish blog that I can’t read (unfortunately Google translate doesn’t do it justice). Other top picks are definitely Let’s Go from the Gangsteppaz, Cambodia from The Phantom and Accordian from Vanatoski.

All this goes to show that Cracow clearly has some impressive emerging talent at the moment. Just back from a North American tour (Toronto included), Supra1 (part of the Trouble & Bass camp) recently did a great mix for Discobelle and have made bass side LFO’s work for them in new and interesting ways. They’ve got some material dropping on T&B soon, but until then, I’ve got their massive remix of Blackfinger’s UMF for you that dropped last winter.

Klezmer

oldbikehorn

Another day another horn. This track isn’t trying to be the big bangin’ horn beat bringing everyone to their knees in the middle of a dance. It exercises slight decorum where other tracks would likely explode, making it a perfect carry through or “get-focused” kind of listen. It could be house, it could be tech-house, but either way I think it’s flawless.  Pizetta has been taking me on some great rides with this for a while now so I just had to share.  It’s been kicking around since April on Electroshoc vinyl but now has a few digital incarnations for easier access.  The dOP mix is nice too.

Cooly

Cooly G is what some might call the first lady of “funk-step”, mostly because her creations seriously blur the lines between the dubstep and funky vibes of late. Garnering love and support from both circles and being featured on the recent Five Years Of Hyperdub compilation suggests this is definitely a talent to keep an eye on.  There’s a fantastic article XLR8R did on Cooly G and the movement in September if you want to read more, otherwise just listen.  Narst / Love Dub was her first vinyl effort and dropped this past June on the ‘dub.  All three cuts have lured me back in for listen after listen but Love Dub is definitely the drooler in my books.  Cooly rolls her own seductive vox over some swelling pads and congas that move along perfectly with the two-steppy beat.  Narst has some darker than usual funky string action going on… it’s also dope and definitely more ripe for the dance cave than Love Dub. But seriously, everyone needs a love dub don’t they?

Dubstep Forum is saying her upcoming Cooly An Da Gang is out within a week that Weekend Fly has just dropped on vinyl along with Mala’s Level Nine.  Next work including Cooly An Da Gang and Dub Organizer Vol. 5 are on their way.
