Discount Cafergot

Chillin on a Good Friday (aren't they all 'good'?) and thought it was time to drop some heavyweight dubstep tunes.  Here are a few that have been rumbling out of my sub for the past little while.  The new Breakage Discount Cafergot, album is still on heavy, heavy rotation.

Gotta love the home grown Canadian talent pushing the sounds forward in the dubstep game.  Datsik (who is from Kelowna, BC) has seen huge success in the last year with him and fellow Canadian and label mate Excision dominating the beatport dubstep sales.  Here is a wikkid stomper from the bad boy producer, 40mg Cafergot. 10mg Cafergot, Datsik - 3 Fist Style

Here's a relatively new bit from Chase & Status which features a dark and grimey bass line mixes with some techy futuristic synths.  Any time these guys produce dubstep I am always excited to check it.

A new remix from Skream as he reworks Zomby's Float. He is really been coming out with a lot of this old school style drum and bass / garage type sound and I think its rad as fuck.  I love the catchy Aaliyah sample in this, Cafergot ebay. Cafergot uk, Zomby - Float (Skream's I Was In Infant's School Where Were You In '92 Mix)

And last but not least, Joker continues to bring the funk with another huge track Tron.  This one is spaced the fuck out, 250mg Cafergot, Cafergot australia, I love it.

Tron is unfuckwithable… I don’t care what anyone says.

I’m pretty new to dubstep. Discovered it over Christmas and have quickly spent a small fortune building a library of 320’s, but finding myself in the last few weeks undable to find many tunes that I like?

I feel like there is a completely unrealized potential in this genre. I’m longing for something that I’ve only caught hints of, that I can’t put my finger on. I want energy and progression without it always having to be about the wobble and the drive-by shootings. I want more tracks that have enough songwriting and melody and hooks that I don’t need an epic bass bin to appreciate them.

Anybody else feeling this way, or am I just playing in the wrong sandbox?

By the way, I do love some of the mellower stuff like 16Bit “shallow” and some of the nice remixes and chilled stuff I’m finding here on this site…

    I don’t know what I’m trying to say here… I guess I’m just frustrated because I’m not finding anything I love lately…

    Jason,

You familiar with older dubstep? Loefah, Digital Mystikz, Burial, Kromestar, Skream, Kode9. If you don’t like the first two you don’t like dubstep, and the others are all worth a look.

    Jason,

First off, thanks for the well written and meaningful post. It is a breath of fresh air, believe me. We love to see these kind of discussions on the blog as it only further enhances the purpose of this web site.

Dubstep as a genre has grown exponentially in the past 12-18 months and I would agree that it may have reached a “stale” point. It seems to me like there are more and more producers trying to create that extremely aggressive, heavy metal smasher of a tune. With the success of guys like Datsik and Excision a lot of people have been jumping on the bandwagon trying to cash in. Don’t get me wrong, I love the floor stomping smashers as much as the next fan but it can’t all be super aggressive face melt.

The genre is now going in two completely different directions. The other direction takes on a ‘deeper’ path laced with melodies and ‘off beat’, ‘half step’ type sounds. This creates a more spaced out, mellow listening experience that is more suited to everyday life. This path has been created by a wide variety of producers like: Burial, Joker, Scuba, Starkey, XI, Darkstar, Synkro, Joy Orbison, Flying Lotus, Martyn, 2562, etc. This is the stuff I would tend to throw on at home while chilling on a Sunday afternoon.

Thanks again for posting and I wish you good luck in finding those tunes that will keep you coming back for more.

    Billionaire,

Thanks for some names on the deeper tip! Been in the same place as Jason as I spun drum and bass for ages and recently started adding more and more dubstep to my collection after picking up serato… It was easy to find all the “rusko-ish” party time shit but was lost on the deeper and in some cases more mellow dubstep. Again thanks for posting some names for us newbies to check out! Big ups on the site! Oh ya…. reup that Skream remix of Float that shit is HUGE!

Thanks Oli and Billionaire for the feedback, really appreciate it.
I will spend the next few days tracking down all your suggestions.
One more question, I use Juno and BeatsDigital for my 320s. Am I missing another good source?

Again, I just started back into this. I used to spin records back in the day and would like to get back into it again and when I found dubstep there was just something about it I loved. Now I just need a set I can play for my 30+ aged friends that won’t have them diving under the table afraid, if that makes any sense.

Again, thanks man and keep up the great work here. I’ve been reading here for a while and love it.

Diggin the dubby sounds of Heyoka, Vibesquad, Pantyraid, etc. more than the darker stuff.

I’d say Dubstep is taking 3 turns at the moment actually:

One would be the more chilled tunes (Burial, etc) that is very low key and relaxing to listen to.

Two would be the dark, ambient type (Distance) where there’s more of a grind to it but mixes in a bit more hype to the beat.

Three would be the aggressive, techy tracks (Datsik).

All 3 of em are really enjoyable to listen to, it’s a lot like DnB/Jungle in some ways.

You have a smooth Jungle tune, Aggressive DnB track, then a bit of both that pulls the groove from jungle and mixes in some harsh sounds more like dnb.

that Chase&Status tune, well the first 1 minute of is used as a beat to one of Rihanna’s song on her last album. I’m not her fan but i heard that album and two songs seemed to me as dubstep-alike which was kinda shocking, but I checked who produced that and it was Chase&Status..Btw, I really like your blog and it’s a great source of dubstep tunes for me cause they usually hard to find
