Meat Head

I’d like to introduce you to Meat Head.  A Filthy, grimey, gully, dark and eerie new bit from the British producer  Flux Pavilion.  I am dying to hear this beast of a tune on a proper sound system.  Straight up murkfest mcgee steez.  Get it while it’s hot kids, this one is only a week old!

MOS DUB

Wow.  This is an amazing mash up of sound.  Some seeerious classic selection of classic Dub Reggae chopped and sliced with Mos Def vocals.  Max Tannone has really created a masterpiece with this in my opinion.  I burned this one for the car and it has been getting me to and from work for a week now.  Mad Ting!

Probably my favourite drop on the album is “History Town” which has the Desmond Dekker classic all glitched out.  So sick!

UKC Anthem

Dun kno tha dun kno,  It’s a UKC ting.  A fresh new track from Freeza Chin, Plain English and Riddimz or together as The UKC. These guys are making big moves bringing the Grime and UK Funky to Toronto at a blistering pace.  Every Wednesday from 10pm-Midnight these cats bring the heat on Fusion Radio and more recently have grown the “Toronto Funky” monthly jam into one of Toronto’s most talked about parties.  We had these guys out at our Major Rager party series a couple months back and they slaughtered the dance.  A fast-paced, high-energy set had the crowd skanking harrrrrd.  Straight up sweaty rave vibes.  It was so sick that we almost simultaneously booked them for round 2 which will go down on Sat. July 3rd inside The Augusta House.  In the meantime, you can catch them at the Breakage party May 20th @ Wrongbar and the next Toronto Funky is set for May 21st @ Toika Lounge.

DUBSTEP DROP

Chillin on a Good Friday (aren’t they all ‘good’?) and thought it was time to drop some heavyweight dubstep tunes.  Here are a few that have been rumbling out of my sub for the past little while.  The new Breakage album is still on heavy, heavy rotation.

Breakage ft. Erin – Justified

Gotta love the home grown Canadian talent pushing the sounds forward in the dubstep game.  Datsik (who is from Kelowna, BC) has seen huge success in the last year with him and fellow Canadian and label mate Excision dominating the beatport dubstep sales.  Here is a wikkid stomper from the bad boy producer!

Datsik – 3 Fist Style

Here’s a relatively new bit from Chase & Status which features a dark and grimey bass line mixes with some techy futuristic synths.  Any time these guys produce dubstep I am always excited to check it.

A new remix from Skream as he reworks Zomby’s Float. He is really been coming out with a lot of this old school style drum and bass / garage type sound and I think its rad as fuck.  I love the catchy Aaliyah sample in this.

And last but not least, Joker continues to bring the funk with another huge track Tron.  This one is spaced the fuck out, I love it!

Breakage – Foundation

Front to back, this album fucking delivers.  Breakage has dropped his second LP “Foundation” on the Digital Soundboy label.  This guy is just so dialed in at the moment.  I have been a fan of his Drum and Bass for years but his new sounds have been just killing it.  This album spans a wide range of Dubstep and Drum and Bass and is one of those you can just let run from start to finish.  Top notch production and simply an amazing collection of tunes.  Go grab this release now.

Reggae Roundup – King of The Re-Fix?

Here is a round up of the Reggae tunes I’ve been feeling in the last few months. A few big ones from Jah Cure who is very close to being the biggest name in the game this year.  His “Call On Me” single is all I heard for a week straight when I was down in Jamaica last December. The Cure has seen great success recently with massive hits at home and abroad.

Jah Cure – Call On Me

Jah Cure – Unconditional Love

…and of course a big drop from the HOT HEAD,HOT HEAD!  Busy Signal has quickly become known for his ‘refix’ tunes with him re-creating hit after hit with catchy chorus’ and sharp, quick witted verses.  Doesn’t matter if the original is Drake, Katy Perry or Lady Gaga; Busy seems to just effortlessly flow over these radio anthem beats with creative and X-Rated re-works.

The Realest Song

“The Realest Song” is a blazing hot new single from Jamaican artist Konshens.  This one delivers a much needed positive message to the youth of Jamaica.  “Keep bad mind out of my heart.  Keep Negative out of my thoughts.”  With the current violent unrest in the streets of Jamaica it is always a ray of hope to see some artists trying to keep the message positive and conscious.  Also on the “The Better Life Riddim” is another emotional cry for change from Vybz Kartel in “Life We Living”.

Major Lazer – Never Good Enough

I’ve been waiting for this one to surface since I first listened to the Major Lazer Essential Mix back in July 2009.  The catchy hook sung by Collie Buddz has been ringing in my head on repeat for way too long.  Toronto can get ready for the return of MAY-JAH LAY-ZAH on Saturday April 24th as Embrace continues to set the pace with another huge party at Sound Academy which also features Drop The Lime.

A Menacing Distance

Hailing from South London, Distance is widely regarded as one of the early pioneers in the Dubstep movement.  He has a very distinct sound that has helped shape the genre into what it is today.  Back in 2007 his album “My Demons” (released on Planet Mu) had a huge impact on myself and opened my eyes to this exciting new music genre that was bubbling up.  Since then I’ve been excited to hear each and every release from this versatile producer. After having a quick glance at his myspace page, it appears Distance is going to be playing in Toronto on Friday April 16th!!!! (Which just so happens to be the same night as the Excision party being thrown by Embrace…hmmmm SICK!).  :D

Check out his new track “Menace” released on his very own label “Chestplate”.

This tune almost made my top 10 of 2009 and has really grown on me over time. You need some nice subs to really roll this out one properly.

Back in 2007, Distance showed his versatility with his “My Demons” album on Planet Mu.  This mellow and ambient track really caught my attention:

Paradise Circus

There has been a few different remixes of Massive Attack’s “Paradise Circus” floating around lately as their new album “Heligoland” has just dropped this month.  I find that it’s these kind of tunes that are best suited for remixes (ie: what Skream did with La Roux).  In this case, “Paradise Circus” is laced with some chilling vocals from Hope Sandoval.  Here are a couple bass heavy remixes to check out.

The first is from the Toronto based Dubstep duo Zeds Dead and they are able to add that hype wobbly bass line to the mix.

The next one comes from the UK producer Breakage from the Digital Soundboy camp.  This one has a more melodic churning bass line that will get your feet shufflin.  I’ve been vibing out to this one for a couple weeks now.
