Peer Pressure IV Years

This past weekend I had the pleasure of partying with A-Rock, Hatchmatik, Merk Meny and Shaydakiss – - of  Montreal’s Peer Pressure camp – - at the Drake Hotel on Queen West.  The jam was held to celebrate the crew’s monthly party series — held in the Drake’s underground rave cave — which has become a staple for party rockers in Toronto.  These guys are ultimately responsible for making Mandelephant and I party promoters and general party animals.  The PP Crew knows what is fucking up in terms of music, being sexy and kicking your ass.  If you have not been to a Peer Pressure party, I suggest you do so immediately – or risk missing the jam of a lifetime.  Here is a hot 4-year celebration mix the foursome put together for the jam along with a sweet remix by Merk Meny, the man of many Marks.  Shake and groove.

Terror at Parliament Hill

It has been a couple of months since we last posted about Terror Tone, an extremely talented and hard working producer and DJ from Toronto that has been turning heads around the world with his club-terrorizing bangers.  His Snake Charmer EP on Intellegenix was very well recieved — especially in Europe — and Terror’s recent remix of Gooffee’s Fat Pound was featured as the number one recommended electro track on Juno for the month of July.  Terror has become a very close friend of mine over the past year and I can honestly say he is one of hardest working producers out there  — the man lives for his beats and it is hard to get the man out of his lab.

Terror Tone put together a short promotional mix for a dubstep gig He, Grizzy SWIVL and I (Dick Diamonds) — all representing the Major Rager Fam — played at Ritual Nightclub this past Friday.  The monthly bass party is called “DUBSMACK” and is thrown by the capital’s KNWLDG Entertainment group, and has been gaining heavy steam over the past couple of months.  August’s DUBSMACK! party — on Friday the 13th — was pumped up by the Rager Fam into a energy-filled mega-rager rammed with sweaty bodies that just didn’t give a fuck about anything other than shaking to heavy bass-lines that would blow over the elderly in a hurry.  To see some of the sick pictures from last Friday’s jam, click here.

Terror Tone also sent us his previously unreleased tracks  Die for You — which samples the DnB classic ‘Up All Night’ by John B — and a grimey Barletta edit of Shake to share with our readers.  I have also included a hot little number called ‘She’s a Slut’ by our deadlocked dubaholic Grizzy, who always brings that hyper-type energy to every jam he annihilates.  Check out these nasty Terror Tunes then plan your trip to Ottawa on September 10th, because trust me, the next DUBSMACK we hit will be well worth it!  It’s going to be another all out invasion by the Major Rager fam!

Ey YoYoYoni

What is poppin today everyone?  We apologize profusely for the lack of updates since the 6th, but our FTP has decided to jam the fuck up and has stopped percolating.  I am not a tech-saavy one like Mandelephant, and since he is out in Vancouver playing in the mountains we do not have our reliable tech-titan support as usual.  I cannot upload tunes onto the server, so while I have hot mixes such as ‘The Dubsmack Mixtape’ by Toronto’s Terror Tone and week #8’s Plugcast by Europe’s Tempered DJ’s,  I just can’t upload and share them with you readers.  Luckily for us, I have some goodies from a young UK producer/DJ called  YoYoYoni, who just so happens to be a very avid PnT reader and fan.  His Late Summer Mix 2010 has been spinning in my car on constant repeat for a week straight – longer than a kid with ADHD and no meds could ever dream of.  The whole mix is solid, and includes songs by our good friend O-God, who was really stoked on the mix as well.  My favourite part of the mix is the ultra high energy segment between ~14:00 to ~18:00.  Download the mix and see why.  I have also included a couple of the edits Yoni used in his mix, and they are little nuggets for sure.  Keep checking back because we are working our asses off to remedy the problem – and once we do, its all over for you and your ears!

Plugcast 007: Gooffee

Gooffee has sent us their exclusive podcast — called Getting Plugged & Gooffee — as part of this weeks special plugcast double drop in celebration of MAJOR RAGER’s one year anniversary.  These young producers have been making some serious waves as of late, gaining popularity with their hot Intellegenix release EP 2.  In fact, Juno chose the duo’s tune Fat Pound (Terror Tone Remix) — remixed by Major Rager family member Terror Tone — as the site’s number one recommended electro tune for the month of June.  These young and extremely talented producers not only know how to grease off hot bangers in the studio – but they also know how to get a greasy party banging hotter than a sauna.  The boys came and closed out the night for Major Rager #9 — Terror Tone’s Snake Charmer EP Release party — and I don’t think I have seen a Rager hit such a wild peak as when they played with the Terror.  These guys are definitely on the come up and I suggest that you keep them on your radar because they will be bringing that heat that nobody wants to miss.  If you happen to be in Toronto this weekend and want to see a wicked set by extremely enthusiastic DJ’s, then come check Gooffee at Major Rager’s birthday this Saturday.  Get hyphy.

End of an Era: Major Rager Celebrates a Year of Kensington Mayhem

This week is a special week for us here at Plugged Not Thugged because it marks the 1-year birthday of our highly popular MAJOR RAGER party series.  Major Rager was born from a need to move our nutty 2-story Foxtrot parties (originally held at Mr. Mandelephant’s King St. loft) to an actual venue, as we were bringing in over 250 people every other month to Deezy’s abode — which became a filthy and costly affair.  MAJOR RAGER — which has been running and steadily growing for twelve long months — has been held at the Augusta House, our favorite Kensington Market hangout.  Despite the fact that Augusta’s staff and management are the best people we have worked with, the Rager parties have simply outgrown the venue’s maximum capacity of 198 patrons.  Life is a series of eras, and we would like to sincerely thank the Augusta House staff for the wonderful year that Major Rager enjoyed with them — we wish you all the best and thank you for everything!

To commemorate the end of a wonderful era,  the headliners of the showTape Deck Bros and Gooffee — have both recorded their exclusive plugcast mixes for PnT.  The Tape Deck Bros  “Plugged in the Tapedeck” exclusive has just been posted — and the hot Gooffee mix will be posted later today so keep your eyes peeled.  The Rager series will be moving to legendary College Street hangout Andy Poolhall for the September 4th Major Rager, which will increase capacity to approximately 500 patrons, and provide a gigantic amount of bar space – so the booze will flow like the Nile.  Get wild!

Plugcast 006: Tape Deck Bros.

Toronto’s Ash Ainsworth and Chris Sanakidis — more commonly referred to as the Tape Deck Bros by hot young girls — have been corrugating the hell out of the scene in the past year with their in-your-face party rocking and cardboard headpieces that remind me of low-budget Daft Punk helmets made by broke-ass college kids who have completely mismanaged their funds.  These two Mega City natives have been producing music together since before their electric shift to electro-house in the mid 00’s.  The former “Animal Clinic” band members have been working their asses off and it seems to be working out for them, as the Bro’s have been gaining a strong following among throngs of horny, young and sweaty college kids that fiend for high-energy parties which are perfect for freaking the fuck out.

If you really want to get an idea of how these guys corrugate the dancefloor with their electro-house vibes and sweat inducing  flavour, check out this exclusive PnT mix the boys sent us to pump up the pre-game crowd before they make their first appearance at our monthly Major Rager party in Kensington Market this coming weekend.  You can also catch the two box-heads at the beginning of every week for Monday Meetings at the Social — the location of their highly popular weekly residency thrown in conjunction with the Mansion Entertainment group. The track listing for the mix can be found after the jump.

If you loved the original, get blazed on this.

PNT @ Manchester Global Radio (UK)

The past week has been a sweaty pit-stain of a work-hole here at the Plugged Not Thugged headquarters, and we have been working like dogs to bring our readers some new flavor to rattle the taste buds and energize the mind.  We have two very special bits of news that we are pumped to share with all you floor-stompers across the globe.  The first announcement is that today will be the official launch of our Exclusive Plugcast Series here at PNT, where we will share hot and fresh exclusive mixes by artists from across the world, including our hometown Toronto.  Keep your eyes open for the first PNT plugcast post on the site later today!

The second exciting announcement is that we are honored to have officially accepted an invitation to work with our friends Michael Godsmark and Daniel Gent (of upcoming Tech House duo Curious George & The Agent) on their bi-weekly “Curious George & The Agent” radio show on Manchester Global Radio.  Michael and Dan have said that the show will focus mainly on Tech / House / Minimal music and have asked us to provide them with three “PNT Picks of the Week” which they will feature on the program every fortnight (2 weeks).  I wanted to point out that this isn’t just another online radio-station, but rather a station put together by industry professionals aiming to promote the gnarly influence that is UK underground dance music.  The station boasts a heavily stacked contributor lineup consisting of some of Europe’s finest DJs, producers and labels such as David Dunno (Hed Kandi), Kevin Andrews (Hoxton Whores), Jenny Harrison (Twisted Sista), David Ellis (Funky House), Jeff Jefferson (Moneypenny’s Music), Steve Sinclair (Funky House), Manchester Underground Music (MUM) along with many others.  To learn more about these contributors and others at Manchester Global, click here.

I have put together a little mix n’ match loot-bag for our readers to commemorate this exciting occasion.  This lootie consists of a tech house remix of Dance Area’s AA 24/7, a chewy ‘09 summer jam by Demarco, Mr. Lexx’s heater Dem A Pree – released in the spring – and a little flashy bit from Blackstrobe that Hatchmatik burned the dance floor with during his set with Mandelephant this weekend.  Dust em off !!

Birthday Anthems

Electronic music producer and skateboard enthusiast Hans Edquist (aka: Barletta) has been a very good friend to us here at Plugged Not Thugged, and we would like to wish him a very happy 24th birthday.  Barletta is a prime example of how great the Toronto scene can be because this guy doesn’t just put his heart into his tunes and shows, but into everything he loves, including his community.  Back in May we had Hans out to our first LARGE MARGE, a new monthly thrown in conjunction with Major Rager.  As per usual, the man simply killed his set and brought pure energy to the party.  While his set was amazing, what really blew my mind was when he dropped the Large Marge Anthem, a tune that he made especially for the party’s debut.  Using samples from songs such as O-God’s Barbara Streisand Remix, our boy made us a very special tune that we will never forget.  We would like to share this awesome little diddy with our readers, along with a sweet new edit he sent us of Pendulum’s song The Island  pt. 2. Happy Birthday Barletta, we love ya bud.

On The Rage

It’s the first Saturday of the month again and that can only mean one thing: disaster.  The monthly party hurricane MAJOR RAGER is back in Kensington for the eleventh time and things are going to be as sweaty as ever up in this bitch.  This month marks the return of the UK Connection (UKC), a group that brings down the warhammer hard on dancefloor party rockers with their reggae, dancehall, electro and UK funky heat.  Things are gonna get hectic tonight, so buckle up and arrive early!

For those looking to keep raging past Ontario’s ultra-soft 2am (actually 1:45) last call, there will be a sick jam afterward which is being organized by some friends who  know how to throw it down large.  We are super excited for this one because our longtime favorites Hatchmatik and A-Rock from Montreal’s Peer Pressure camp will be dropping stingers with PNT’s Mr. Mandelephant.  Mandelephant and I were corrupted by Peer Pressure’s parties back in 2007, where the dancing was out of control, the beats were furious and the sweltering human heat nearly unbearable.  If you need to get some pep in your step, hit this one-two party combo with us tonight – we have the deets and it will be epic.

This mix by A-Rock has been played into the ground by Dick and Deezy.  Shoulder leanin’ never sounded or looked as good as in ‘07.  This killer mix is undoubtedly one of my favorites of all time.

Hatchmatik got lots of blog love for his remixes.  I have been rinsing My Girls thoroughly for more than quite some time.  Here, pop these tunes into your speakers – everyone is doing it.
