Heavy. Scotland’s Hostage has really captured my attention over the past week or so, probably because when I hear his bass-banging techno beats, it feels as though they are blasting through my frail eardrums like a runaway freight train hitting a brick wall. I first heard about hostage — a Nightshifter’s artist who brings only the freshest bass-filled produce to market — in passing as I checked out Dani Deahl’s blog right before I saw her destroy the dance floor in Toronto about a week ago. Since then a few of his tracks have burned big holes in my speakers. The coolest thing about Hostage and Nightshifters is that they are offering people a free EP which includes two hot tracks and several remixes of those tracks! If you like bass music that deviates from the norm and doesn’t quite fit in the dubstep category, then lock yourself in a room with the big bad bass monster that is Hostage. He takes no prisoners.

Also loving this remix of Axwell’s (feat. Errol Reid) tune Nothing but Love by Diesel Laws. That fat ass “ERROR BASS” — as I like to call it — that drops in around 1:38 is just blazing and makes my life want to re-boot. Diesel Laws is also offering this tune forfree — what is this, free-town? Grip it then pump it.

I thought I would never say it, but…think I really like dubstep. Ever since Plugged Not Thugged agreed to become the official sponsor of BASSMENTALITY, Zed’s Dead and Killabits‘ insanely popular-bi-weekly in Toronto, I have been exposed to dubstep regularly and have become more and more fond of dubstep and heavy bass music as a result. While stomping out rib-rattling bass lines is almost exclusively Billionaire’s job, I just can’t help but post Sub Focus‘ remix of Rusko’s overly laid-back dubstep song Hold On with Amber Coffman. While the original didn’t really tickle my knickers, the remix by Sub Focus definitely did. Just love the contrast that goes on before and after the one minute mark – from a soft and non-threatening female voice in song to an unrelenting fury of lazer bass-chainsaws ripping through your face and skull. Hella gnarly track.

The PnT crew is really excited to announce that we have some amazing exclusive mixes coming our way from some of our favorite producers. We just received an absolutely massive tech-house mix from our friends Curious George & The Agent (UK) as well as one from the First Lady of Beatdown — Lady Blacktronika (USA). We also look forward to a promotional exclusive from our hometown turntable champion DJ TASC (CAN), which will be available for download here at Plugged Not Thugged before his new EP with rude boy Marcus Visionary (CAN) drops next month.
Curious George & The Agent sent us this really sweet bootleg of The XX’’s tune Crystallised. This little nugget was featured in DJ MAG a few months back and I thought it would be a good idea to share this savory morsel and another little bonus before unleashing the new mix. Make sure to chew one hundred times before swallowing kids!

It’s been a long time coming, but I’d like to introduce all you loyal PnT readers to the first official new addition to the team since we got things going last January. Coming to us with keen ears, quick fingers and a penchant for only the greasiest in heavy bass and electro knockers is a man with more nick names than real names, ladies and gentlemen… DICK DIAMONDS!
A couple months back I linked Lee N.B. Funky Harris on Facebook and became a fan of his funky digital retail outlet (ukfunky.com). Though the site is a little difficult to navigate, he does send regular on point updates via fb with all sorts of goodies. Lately they’ve been pushing quite a lot from G-REX recordings run out of Holland by Gregor Salto and Co. Many of the releases from this camp reveal how heavily funky bass has been influenced by the deep tribal sounds of Afrobeat. Lying somewhere in between Afrobeat, Funky and House are Salto’s Morning Drums release from early ‘09 and Jason Cheiron’s Abokuta EP from late ‘08 (this one screams deepened Zombie Disco Squad to me). Both have heft, both have chunk and both will be getting a proper rinse. A favorite nugget from each below!!!

As Toyota brings Scion to Canada in 2010, Scion brings free music to Toronto. Their AV division must be helping their marketing as they’re throwing a free jam at Mod Club tonight with Drop The Lime, AC Slater, Jokers Of The Scene and Nacho Lovers. RSVP here and check this invite for more info.
It seems that most blogs worth talking about these days have some sort of mix series going for ‘em, so to celebrate approximately one year in the blogosphere and the start of our mix series I present you PnTM-1: Mr. Mandelephant’s Sinister Nugget Mix. 70 minutes of sub infused house knockers mixed by yours truly using two Stanton STR8 150s, a DJM 800 and an SL1.
Payme’s take on Riva Starr’s latest lemon packs some of the best hydraulic bass knock the PnT Rockit 6s have heard in months. Trim butters this beat with serious swagger and low riding flow rocking Dance Me A Dance on the up and down. Some sexy minimal blips and toms in there to round out the chunk as well… so heavy! Couldn’t find much (or rather any) info about this mystery producer, so if you know the deal speak up. Cop this along with the rest of the release in all it’s three hundred and twenty K glory here.
Riva Starr feat. Trim – Dance Me (Payme Remix) (128K)
Taken down by request from Made To Play.
This video is amazing… and it involves dancing dolphin trainers at Marine Land. Um… what?
I don’t know much about this guy, but his tracks are a grease fire waiting to happen. He goes by the name of Hot City and he’s crafted a wicked jackin’ house bomb in No More. What can I say, ravey piano stabs just never seem to get old to me…

Infrasonics, the label that put out this track, have some pretty interesting dubstep as well.
Skream and Benga are currently on their world tour which has seen them pass through much of Europe and are now set to tear up Western Canada this weekend with a Sunday stop in Toronto @ Wrongbar. $20 Advance Tickets can be bought online HERE and are in stock at Play De Record and Rotate This in Toronto.
Here is a very recent set from the dynamic duo live @ FWD from June 7th, 2009.
Also, back in September of 2008 they played to an outdoor audience in Barcelona, Spain. MC LowQui is on the mic and the tunes are heavy. Ive been rinsing this mix for a couple months steady anticipating the slaughterhouse that will be Sunday night!
