Seriously though, Riva Starr has been consistently impressing everyone with his “re-chunks” all year and now the gypsy feast that is I Was Drunk is finally on deck. The dub mix and Black and White on the B side are nice little strippers too in case you’re not down with Noze’s Parisian tomfoolery, but the lyrics really are classic. I’m glad to see something a little kooky topping the charts and I certainly won’t mind hearing this around town for a while.

Finally, a new EP from Boy 8-Bit. I’ve been waiting for this ever since I killed the Suspense Is Killing Me (ha!) for myself by listening to it 100+ times in the weeks following its release. The same thing appears to be happening with pretty much every track off the Baltic Pine EP (released at the end of June), but the real stand out track is A City Under Siege. It’s got just the right touch of baltimore zeal and makes me feel like I just smashed an 80’s 8-bit rendition of Prince Arthur’s Quest for the Holy Grail and am watching the closing cut scene. Baltic Pine feels more like exploring a mythical castle for the first time or the kind of music that would play while a princess looks at herself in the mirror and slowly morphs into a zombie… something like that.
Wolfen and Chapel of Ghouls hit heavy as well, but you’re going to have to show this man some Beatport love for those. Untouchable.

We’ve been on a bit of a hiatus here at Plugged Not Thugged lately as Billionaire has been busy droppin’ the heavy bass-step street side and I was on a two week tour of Europe (not to be confused with me being “on” tour, which I was not). It’s all good though, because we’re back with some good stuff for you. Ears open please…
A DJ whose tracks have been a blink blinkin’ on my radar for the past little while is pictured above: DJ W!ld. Hailing from L’Ile in France and crafting some of the most rhythmically seductive slow builders I’ve ever heard, without further a due here are a couple pieces of this man’s stellar work.

Released on Off Records at the end of April, this has some heavy reverb on plucked strings sitting atop a bed of mellow acoustic bass and Cuban horns. Passionate.

This one just dropped on Robsoul Recordings mid-June and samples Tom Scott and California Dreamers’ song Today (circa Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s T.R.O.Y). Classic.
Support the troops and grab some of his tracks from the good old Beatport.

There has been a ton of buzz permeating the blogosphere about Scandinavian duo Renaissance Man. Their debut EP Spraycan dropped on Dubsided wax at the end of April but was released digitally on Beatport just last week. To be put quite simply, this shit slays so hard it’s just unfair. It’s not necessarily a track that you get the first time you listen to it, but after a few listens… serious staying power. Renaissance Man even recruited Swedish super producers Sharkslayer to remix the joint and it’s a blaring cacophony of blistering beeps and horns. Show all these cats some love and cop the EP.
Spraycan has even been getting big upped by all the big guns from Diplo to Trizzy. In fact, Diplo dropped this track in his last set in Toronto and the results were EPIC.
Here it is in all its glory:

They’ve also got some pretty murky sounding mixes on their myspace, but the one that really stood out to me was the Rene’s Party House Mix they did back in February.
Peep the tracklist after the bump ‘n grind.
