A Next Reggae Round Up!

The acoustic guitar driven “Bomb Drop Riddim” is a Tarik “Russian” Johnson production that dropped earlier this year.  The Vybz Kartel ganja tune Marie takes the whole riddim by far but don’t overlook a strong message from the conscious artist I Octane in This is Real (Pressure).

Gyptian – Better Day

The biggest name in dancehall right now is still the “Gully God” Mavado.  Produced by Steven “Di Genius” McGregor, Nine Lives sends a simple message reminding us to not take things in life for granted; “From yuh have life, yuh have everyting”.

I have heard at least five different remixes of Gyptian’s Hold Yuh floating around.  Lately, the Major Lazer rework has been getting some heavy rotations up at our parties around Toronto.

On The Rage

It’s the first Saturday of the month again and that can only mean one thing: disaster.  The monthly party hurricane MAJOR RAGER is back in Kensington for the eleventh time and things are going to be as sweaty as ever up in this bitch.  This month marks the return of the UK Connection (UKC), a group that brings down the warhammer hard on dancefloor party rockers with their reggae, dancehall, electro and UK funky heat.  Things are gonna get hectic tonight, so buckle up and arrive early!

For those looking to keep raging past Ontario’s ultra-soft 2am (actually 1:45) last call, there will be a sick jam afterward which is being organized by some friends who  know how to throw it down large.  We are super excited for this one because our longtime favorites Hatchmatik and A-Rock from Montreal’s Peer Pressure camp will be dropping stingers with PNT’s Mr. Mandelephant.  Mandelephant and I were corrupted by Peer Pressure’s parties back in 2007, where the dancing was out of control, the beats were furious and the sweltering human heat nearly unbearable.  If you need to get some pep in your step, hit this one-two party combo with us tonight – we have the deets and it will be epic.

This mix by A-Rock has been played into the ground by Dick and Deezy.  Shoulder leanin’ never sounded or looked as good as in ‘07.  This killer mix is undoubtedly one of my favorites of all time.

Hatchmatik got lots of blog love for his remixes.  I have been rinsing My Girls thoroughly for more than quite some time.  Here, pop these tunes into your speakers – everyone is doing it.

Reggae Roundup – King of The Re-Fix?

Here is a round up of the Reggae tunes I’ve been feeling in the last few months. A few big ones from Jah Cure who is very close to being the biggest name in the game this year.  His “Call On Me” single is all I heard for a week straight when I was down in Jamaica last December. The Cure has seen great success recently with massive hits at home and abroad.

Jah Cure – Unconditional Love

…and of course a big drop from the HOT HEAD,HOT HEAD!  Busy Signal has quickly become known for his ‘refix’ tunes with him re-creating hit after hit with catchy chorus’ and sharp, quick witted verses.  Doesn’t matter if the original is Drake, Katy Perry or Lady Gaga; Busy seems to just effortlessly flow over these radio anthem beats with creative and X-Rated re-works.

The Realest Song

“The Realest Song” is a blazing hot new single from Jamaican artist Konshens.  This one delivers a much needed positive message to the youth of Jamaica.  “Keep bad mind out of my heart.  Keep Negative out of my thoughts.”  With the current violent unrest in the streets of Jamaica it is always a ray of hope to see some artists trying to keep the message positive and conscious.  Also on the “The Better Life Riddim” is another emotional cry for change from Vybz Kartel in “Life We Living”.

Major Lazer – Never Good Enough

I’ve been waiting for this one to surface since I first listened to the Major Lazer Essential Mix back in July 2009.  The catchy hook sung by Collie Buddz has been ringing in my head on repeat for way too long.  Toronto can get ready for the return of MAY-JAH LAY-ZAH on Saturday April 24th as Embrace continues to set the pace with another huge party at Sound Academy which also features Drop The Lime.

Lady G – Nuff Respect (Rumours Riddim – 1988)

Lady-G

I’m gonna take it back to the old school for a hot second.  In 1988 the Rumours Riddim dropped and took the dancehall scene by storm.  Originally produced by Augustus “Gussie” Clarke this has become one of the most classic dancehall riddims to date with numerous re-workings of it surfacing in the last 20 years.  The infectious bass line is just way too rude and is sure to make you move your feet.  The biggest drop on the riddim may be up for debate but in my mind Lady G just kills everything with her cut “Nuff Respect”.  A close second is Gregory Isaacs with the title track “Rumours”.  Special mention goes to Josey Wales “Everyone Hustling”.  Check it!

Busy Signal continues to be the hottest artist in the Dancehall scene.  He is on fiya right now with a couple blazin new tracks on the “Indiscretions Riddim” produced by Juke Boxx Productions.  Indiscretions is really chill new riddim with a catchy guitar riff at the start which is blowing up the dance across the world.  These two Busy tracks show the true versatility of this artist as everyone know: Busy can flow; fast or slow.

I’ve been really feeling the new reggae coming out this year and the Indiscretions Riddim is definitely one of the hottest riddims of 2009. It is packed full with the usual suspects who dominate the dancehall circuit as well as a couple up and coming artists. Here are some of the big cuts on the riddim!

Assassin – Stay Like Bees

Laden – Nuh Talk

Jah Cure – Searching

Peetah Heritage – Secrets

Richie Spice – Soothing Sound

Capleton – Acres

Konshens – Straight Forward

Collie Buddz – Eyez / Now She’s Gone

294_collie

Collie Buddz has some new music floating around which indicates there’s likely a 2nd album coming from this dancehall star.  After the success of the first album many are waiting to hear if the young artist can come back strong.  Here are a couple big new tunes from Collie.

Hopefully we’ll see him pass through Toronto some time soon.  Las time he passed through Hamilton in Dec.2007 it was a SICK show!  Check out some of the footage I got from that show:

Mavado – Neva Believe Yuh

mavadoooo

The “Gully God” is back with another smash hit produced by Dasaeca.  After a series of relatively boring releases, Mavado is back with one of the hottest tunes in the dancehall right now.

HOT HEAD!

busy2

Busy Signal is coming out of the gate FAST in 2009.  His new track “Spliff Tail” on the Dubwise Riddim is a fresh new ganja tune from an artist that is definitely standing out in his class of dancehall superstars.  Speaking of new ganja tunes…check out the new Collie Buddz – “Herb Tree”.

Anyways…Back to Busy!  Another crazy new single is “My Money”.  Such a catchy chorus in this tune…just wanna play it again and again!

He gets mad vulgar up on the Miss Independent Riddim with “Tightest” (FOR THE LADIES!!!!..haha)…..

Check out these videos of Busy Signal live @ Tim Westwood Studios.

Freestyle- Westwood Radio 1 – Busy Signal & Lloyd

Unfortunately Lloyd is in the videos for a bit and tries to keep up but Busy just throws down a lesson in spitting crazy bars.  Busy is just simply on some next level, mesmerizing melody type shit.  Crazy flow!

I’ve been showing these vids to everyone I know for months now.  Can’t believe the skills.   HOT HEAD! HOT HEAD!…
