Electronic music producer and skateboard enthusiast Hans Edquist (aka: Barletta) has been a very good friend to us here at Plugged Not Thugged, and we would like to wish him a very happy 24th birthday. Barletta is a prime example of how great the Toronto scene can be because this guy doesn’t just put his heart into his tunes and shows, but into everything he loves, including his community. Back in May we had Hans out to our first LARGE MARGE, a new monthly thrown in conjunction with Major Rager. As per usual, the man simply killed his set and brought pure energy to the party. While his set was amazing, what really blew my mind was when he dropped the Large Marge Anthem, a tune that he made especially for the party’s debut. Using samples from songs such as O-God’s Barbara Streisand Remix, our boy made us a very special tune that we will never forget. We would like to share this awesome little diddy with our readers, along with a sweet new edit he sent us of Pendulum’s song The Island pt. 2. Happy Birthday Barletta, we love ya bud.

It’s the first Saturday of the month again and that can only mean one thing: disaster. The monthly party hurricane MAJOR RAGER is back in Kensington for the eleventh time and things are going to be as sweaty as ever up in this bitch. This month marks the return of the UK Connection (UKC), a group that brings down the warhammer hard on dancefloor party rockers with their reggae, dancehall, electro and UK funky heat. Things are gonna get hectic tonight, so buckle up and arrive early!
For those looking to keep raging past Ontario’s ultra-soft 2am (actually 1:45) last call, there will be a sick jam afterward which is being organized by some friends who know how to throw it down large. We are super excited for this one because our longtime favorites Hatchmatik and A-Rock from Montreal’s Peer Pressure camp will be dropping stingers with PNT’s Mr. Mandelephant. Mandelephant and I were corrupted by Peer Pressure’s parties back in 2007, where the dancing was out of control, the beats were furious and the sweltering human heat nearly unbearable. If you need to get some pep in your step, hit this one-two party combo with us tonight – we have the deets and it will be epic.
This mix by A-Rock has been played into the ground by Dick and Deezy. Shoulder leanin’ never sounded or looked as good as in ‘07. This killer mix is undoubtedly one of my favorites of all time.

Hatchmatik got lots of blog love for his remixes. I have been rinsing My Girls thoroughly for more than quite some time. Here, pop these tunes into your speakers – everyone is doing it.

Pupkulies & Rebecca is a fantastic group out of Berlin which produces experimental pop, tech-house and dub infused ear burners which give me goosebumps and keep my body and mind pure. I just ran into this succulent remix of their ultra-catchy tune Burning Boats, by funky psych-house duo Masomenos out of Paris. Beautiful female vocals, slow piano keystrokes and constant kicks make for a great Sunday afternoon tune that will sooth the soul and mind. Too bad it is Monday.

Our good pal Luke “Terror Tone” Dziadkowiec just finished his latest release called The Snake Charmer EP and put together a brain melting promo mix to showcase his new work. This extremely focused and hard working cat crafts a nasty blend of bass music that synthesizes elements of house, break beat, garage and UK Funky into a chunky sub rattling stew that’s sure to bump floors the globe over. For our Toronto heads, be sure to catch Terror Tone tonight at our monthly Major Rager jam at Augusta House in Kensington Market.
In addition to half of the tracks in this sizzling mix being his own, TT also got some serious love from the guys over at Bass Music blog for his remix of Tongue Riddim. Big!!! Toronto’s own DJ Barletta is a man on a mission. Dude just cranks out sooo many dirty tunes its almost ridiculous. In between producing on a regular basis he is out rocking crowds all over the fucking place. He came through and just murked out our Major Rager monthly last month and recently sent us over a few juicy little bits for you to sink your teeth into. The first one is a nice little edit of the Doctor P dubstep anthem “Sweet Shop”. The first 2 minutes is pure Barleezy fiyaaa and then he lets the original rolllll out.

Chris James and Derek Brian Williamson might strike you as two regular joes who like the odd party. But once they team up and hit the decks, any type of jam—be it a supper club social or a seedy shaker in a run down dumpster—quickly becomes a raunchy hot mess that resembles a very sweaty carnival in Rio de Janeiro—minus the elaborate outfits and blinding glitter. I have seen these guys turn motionless hotties into flamethrowers and head-bobbing wallflowers into heat seeking missiles when they unleash their signature disco, hip-hop and electro-club banging muffin mix on a hungry crowd packed into a club so hot it resembles your momma’s oven. The Hotmess DJs have a steady following and are constantly being booked to play some of Toronto’s most popular establishments. These guys put in work, and their versatility on the decks becomes obvious once you have listened to one of their sets live and direct. Chris and Derek were stoked when we asked them to put together an exclusive mix for our blog, and we are just as stoked to share it. Greasy nuggets on speed.

There has been considerable buzz on the internet about a nasty little nugget of heat called “Barbara Streisand” by Duck Sauce, the mega-duo made up of Armand Van Helden and A-Trak. Everyone is freaking out over this jam and the hype around it’s release has built to a point where it is unquestionably destined to be one of 2010’s biggest dance club bangers. Well, our fellow Major Rager Crew member O-God just couldn’t wait any longer and recreated the tune with his own twist and asked us to share it with those who need to fix that itch quick-time. O-God, who is traditionally known for bringing the pain to parties with his charged DJ sets and beer-crushing skills, has been turning up the heat lately when it comes to production, with some real solid remixes such as his Streetlab Remix for Salacious Sound’s remix competition. You can catch this dance floor demon dropping brain-melting bangers every week at Tiki Thursdays and the first Saturday of every month at our Major Rager in Kensington Market.

Dun kno tha dun kno, It’s a UKC ting. A fresh new track from Freeza Chin, Plain English and Riddimz or together as The UKC. These guys are making big moves bringing the Grime and UK Funky to Toronto at a blistering pace. Every Wednesday from 10pm-Midnight these cats bring the heat on Fusion Radio and more recently have grown the “Toronto Funky” monthly jam into one of Toronto’s most talked about parties. We had these guys out at our Major Rager party series a couple months back and they slaughtered the dance. A fast-paced, high-energy set had the crowd skanking harrrrrd. Straight up sweaty rave vibes. It was so sick that we almost simultaneously booked them for round 2 which will go down on Sat. July 3rd inside The Augusta House. In the meantime, you can catch them at the Breakage party May 20th @ Wrongbar and the next Toronto Funky is set for May 21st @ Toika Lounge.

We are excited to announce that Toronto’s DJ Barletta sent us a special little treat that he put together for the fans of Plugged Not Thugged. To pump up the party monsters who are attending MAJOR RAGER #8 at Augusta House this coming Saturday, Barleezy—who is headlining the event—has assembled an Exclusive Plugged Not Thugged Minimix that is sure to get the Rager crowd amped for another mega-gnarly shaker in Kensington Market. The minimix is nothing but pure fire, and gives fans a small taste of Barleezy’s new work which includes the likes of Toronto natives Paul D & Terror Tone, among others. The track list is provided below, along with a link to the mix.

The first Saturday of the month is once again before us, which means that it is time for Toronto’s party animals and beat freaks to prepare their hottest clothes and best dance moves for the 7th installment of the poppin’ MAJOR RAGER party series. The Major Rager Crew has put forth a real greasy line-up of local selectahs including Rager resident’s Billionaire, O-God and Ballistik, all of which have been known to get the dance floor shaking with bass-heavy heaters. The headlining act of the night will be the real treat however, as the crew has brought in party-slammers UKC, or the UK Connection, which consists of DJ Freeza Chin and MC’s Plain English & Riddimz. I have personally seen these guys get dance floors sweatier than soccer locker rooms after championship games, and they are known in Toronto for their high energy sets which evoke nothing but the stankiest of skankin’ among party goers. For more information on this month’s Rager, check out the facebook event here.
