Bass Music of 2009: A Year in Review…

DSC02462xxxxx2

Yesterday I was walking through a shopping mall and as I passed by the Parasuco store I was amazed as I heard Dubstep pounding out of the store speakers and into the mall concourse…. it occured to me at that point that there probably wasn’t a bigger hit in 2009 than the anthem “In For The Kill (Skream Remix)”.

Needless to say it was a big year for Dubstep as the genre exploded onto the world stage. Here in Toronto we were spoiled with headliner after headliner.  Promo companies like Embrace & 40 hz were busy bringing most of the biggest names in the game.

Eyes on Fire (Dubstep Remixes)

Blue Foundation is a group of musicians originating from Denmark and they have recently gained a lot of popularity with their tune “Eyes on Fire” from the Twilight soundtrack.  I was originally put on to the Zeds Dead remix when our friends over at Salacious Sound featured the Toronto duo on their blog.  Instantly I fell in love with the remix and now recently they are getting some HUGE global recognition for the track as it was featured on Skream’s Nov.11th edition of his popular “Stella Sessions”.  Recently the track was remixed again by another up and coming Toronto dubstep producer Evidence.  Putting a more mellow spin on the tune, Evidence is able to preserve the atmospheric and eerie vibe of the original.  Check em out below.

Dubstep has arrived in this fine city of ours and there is one promotion company that is absolutely TRAIL BLAZING their way through the end of 2009.  Embrace has gone ahead and booked some of the biggest dubstep dons in the game today and I am absolutely ecstatic for the next few months in Toronto!

Benga (Sept.18th @ Mod Club), Skream (Sept.27th @ Wrongbar), Martyn (Oct.4th @ Wrongbar), Rusko (Oct.9th @ Mod Club), Caspa (Nov.1st @ Wrongbar), Bassnectar (Nov.26th @ Wrongbar), Joker & Nomad (Nov.29th @ Wrongbar).

Ungh.  Better save up your pennies!

Here is an interesting pairing, Eve and Benga.  I love how Benga re-worked this tune with a very catchy and funky beat.

Eve – Me N My (Benga Remix)

And staying on the remix tip, here are a couple other smashers you should already know about:

Kyza – Go (Bar 9 Remix)

Dizzee Rascal & Armand Van Helden – Bonkers (Doorly Remix)

…and if that ‘aggressive’, ‘in your face’ style isn’t your cup of tea, then check out this amazing Burial Remix of Jamie Woon’s “Wayfaring Stranger”.  Very atmospheric and chilled the fuck out.  Love it.

Toronto dubstep/drum n bass/electro producer Evidence is back with another MASSIVE tune “Habitual Ritual”.  In my opinion. his best dubstep creation so far.  This version of the tune is a Plugged Not Thugged exclusive  as we await its full release on Intelligenix in the fall.  You can catch Evidence spinning at one of the biggest dubstep shows of the summer: Sukh Knight Aug.8th @ Suba Lounge in Toronto.  Other local support includes  40 hz frontman Spyne (40 hz) and Sidenote (Sensoria.me). Skream Remixes / Martyn “Great Lengths”

skream

Skream is absolutely killing it right now on the remix tip.  It’s almost like everything this guy touches turns into an instant grimey bassline.  He’s on tour right now with Benga and will be passing through Toronto on Sunday June 14th @ Wrongbar (Check the Facebook Event Invite).  Tickets are $18.50 (plus service charge).

Here’s a few blazing hot remixes to get you hyped for his return to Toronto.

DJ Mujava – Township Funk (Skream Remix)

Distance – Night Vision (Skream Remix)

Dave Gahal – Saw Something (Skream Remix)

Dutch drum and bass producer/DJ Martyn has released his debut LP “Great Lengths” and it is simply amazing. This album is a perfect example of why it’s difficult to pigeonhole Martyn’s music to one genre.  I find that there is a prevalent dub step theme throughout but he’s clearly drawing from other influences as well (drum and bass, dub, minimal house and techno).  You can grab it on beatport for $12.

My favourite track on the album is “These Words ft. dBridge”

RUSKO Mar.30th @ The Social / DUBSTEP DROP

rusko

Christopher Mercer, aka Rusko was born in Leeds in 1985. Veering away from the dark, serious side of the sound Rusko bought a highly driven energy and fun approach to the dubstep massive and quickly coined his own take on the genre and turned the scene upside down. His sound appealed to many people outside of the dubstep world as his productions became more adventurous in formula, sound and energy. His huge hit “Cockney Thug” has been played by everyone from Pete Tong, Switch, Diplo and Santogold. And has been remixed by Buraka Som sistema, Diplo, Drop the Lime and the Scratch Perverts.

His sound continues to develop with different BPM’s that lean to jungle, house, hip hop or electro, either way, whatever BPM or tempo…you can immediately tell a Rusko track.

Be sure to catch RUSKO live at The Social March 30, 2009.

I have been really feeling the dubstep tunes these days and here is a little drop of whats gettin mad rotations up in my studio (aka my livingroom).

Rusko vs Kid Cudi vs Crookers – Day N Night (Rusko’s Big Trombone Remix)

La Roux – In For The Kill (Skream’s Lets Get Ravey Mix)

Chase & Status – Saxon

Nero – This Way
